Trick and Treat

Well, the other night I was in on my own. I wasn't bothered as the house was quiet, the settee very comfortable and the heating was on. My tummy was full so all was well with the world.

The tribe had gone to some strange ritual of carving pumkins in the Village Hall. When they came back I was pleased to hear the Callum the senior grandson had won.

Now, the next night I really enjoyed myself. All these funny kids kept appearing at our door. Some looked quite frightening, but being a brave Boxer dog I put on my brave face. Him and Her-indoors were quite tickled by the young man dressed as a waiter but I think he was really a posh Butler.

Anyway all these kids - and I know quite a lot of them - asked for a 'Trick or treat'. Being reasonably well educated I understand the word 'Treat' but I'm not sure about 'Trick'.

Seems to me that all the kids got a treat, but there was nothing for me! Cruel trick that.

General up date

Evening All,

just a quick word and what's been happening of late. Firstly, thought the hog roast went well, and thanks to all who put in the effort it was great to see so mant faces and every body enjoying the weather...Big thanks to Patrick & Liz.

Apple picking: As many of you will know we are collecting apples for the Saighton blend of apple juice for the coming Apple weekend in October. We have already got a good head start two weeks ago, with many apples being picked from village trees' (thanks for those of you who helped out and gave up your apples - even if you did not know it at the time!)

I must say though, the fruit harvest seems to be a couple of weeks early, and I'm not sure if the apple will last - think a call to the estate is needed...

Blackberrying: Bumper lot this year with a real "rook" of fruit in the hedge lines. We did propose a village blackberrying day, but time is slipping by. Mike Davies has kindly said villages can have access to his fields for the picking of said fruit, but please be mindful of the usual code of shutting gates etc. If you are doing some this weekend please do post a reply/e-mail so folk could meet up.

News letter: Mike, Clair and Mal are producing a village news letter which hopefully the three musketeers postal service will get to you soon - watch your post boxes!

Other events: Halloween /Souling and bonfire night.
Pumpkin making - more to follow
Halloween/Souling. - more to follow
Build a guy on Nov 2nd - more to follow
Burn the guy Nov 5th!
Remembrance day.11th Nov. Nearest Sunday(Sun 8th) It will be a year since Mike, Mikes dad, Mal and myself cleaned up the small plaque for the village fallen of 1914-1918.
If enough people are interested I intend to contact the school and be there on 11:00 on the 11th for a new poppy tribute to be laid. More details when I have it.

All good stuff. A meeting of the existing village hall committee (what's left of it) with our self's will take place soon to scope out future possibilities for the village hall use. I would like to think this will then involve a following general meeting for all to have a say. Any ideas most welcome , but we will keep you posted.

Regards
to all

Gary

Hog Roast

Well, I wasn't excluded from this event like I was from the first one. I walked up the road with Her and Him-indoors and we met Emma and Stephen Shone with their mum and dad. Emma 'dog-sat' me a few days ago whilst Him and Her-indoors went out for the day. I usually go with them but not this time.

Anyway, I was pleased to see Em and Steve again.

When we got to the party I was surprised at how many people I new, particularly the children. I fussed them and they fussed me. Then somebody dropped a steak, so, being a tidy dog I ate it - and very nice it was too. I was offered a sausage, but, I've never been partial to them but I'm sure Jack - Len's dog would have eaten it if he had been there, being a sausage dog!

Then it started to rain, chucked it down really. I don't like rain as it makes my head itch where I had my operation (rumour has it they were looking for my brains). I wouldn't have minded going in that big tent thing with all the kids, but I over-heard Him-indoors saying something about it being a 'Indian Tepee'. Now, I know a thing or two about the Indians and how they used to cut people's hair off rather painfully so I decided not to risk it!

Then we went home and I had some super and went fast asleep. I had a good time and I hope you all did to - see you around.

Polly.

A VILLAGE ESTATE

A RURAL COMMUNITY TRANSMITS ITS POWER

Roses bloom, soaked with cide's chemical or Organic feed.
Secateurs keep them neat and trim, absorbing nitrates with excessive greed.
Heady Perfume the smell, a Pandora paint box opened its lid,
growing as tea, sturdy rambler or climbing amuck-
Given with love or a message of good-luck.

Fox-gloves, Hollyhocks, Delphiniums, Canterbury Bell,
Stand to attention, quite tall they grow.
Propagate them selves with gay abandon-
In hedge-rows, wild in woods, there for all to view-
Waving in the wind, bowing to all they see,
a welcome home for the busy bumble bee.

Mounds of stones covered with moss
Earth in the holes, lay brown and bare.
Scatter seeds within their shape.
Brings forth, rock roses, marigolds, daisy, margarite
Shoots appear then a beautiful flower
covering the rockery with 'flower power'.

A pond nearby laid watery smooth in the sun. (Now extinct)
While fish rose up to greet its raise
Pink and yellow water-lillies,
embarked on opening their delicate petals.
Water trickled, covered leaves for frogs to croak and sit.
A dragon fly, skimmed the water to see its face,
whilst the pond vegetated quiet with solitude and grace.

The wind rushes through a master of trees
Chimes a chorus all of its own.
Surrounding areas, singing different songs,
Not like a band, they do no wrong.
Attuned in sound and colour, they mix and match.
Birds nestle their branches, the young to hatch.

A village, the hall, awash, majestic in the summer sun,
Sits quiet in splendor, colourful and at ease.
The life within its brick built case -
Protecting families, with laughter…… no shelter for pain-
their home is a castle, no matter large or small.
Saighton Village honours its name, summer, winter or fall.

From Chester, you'll travel through in the wink of an eye,
A Union Jack/George Cross salutes, in great British style.
Enfold its richness, passing slowly by-
John Douglas, Architect sublime-
distinguished structures of Red brick,
chimneys spiral in design.

On the Duke of Westminster's Estate,
the village proudly sits.
Companionship to all who inhabit-
2009 with companionship-
enveloping as-
its rustication genuinely fits.

If like me you want to get fit, lose some BBQ weight and look good for summer then maybe its time to start jogging. I've mapped out some routes and distances which start from 2 miles and was hoping to commit to at least twice a week.
Beginners to athlete's are invited, its not the army so no pressure to jog at a quick pace. Its a great way to exercise and have some community fun and jogging as a group makes things a lot easier.
So If your up for the challenge and want to have a go then email me via the link bellow.

Excluded!

Being a prominent member of the village , I was a bit put out when Him-indoors said I couldn't attend the get together on Sunday afternoon. I hear, on the canine vine that in fact Alice, the Staffy pup was there, whilst I lanquished at home on the settee.

However, the day wasn't a complete waste as my supper was duck - admitteldly out of a tin but nice none the less. I've been doing the blogging bit for about two years now, on the Daily Telegraph MyT blog site. I write mainly on dog issues, have a particular hatred of cats but like children and adults as they can be an endless source of snacks. Stuart the Postman has a biscuit for me every day whilst the Dustbin man gives me one weekly.

Can't say I like these new wheelie bins - the wagons are so noisey and Him-indoors keeps chuntering about not 'knowing what goes in what bin when before it was all so simple'.

Well I've got to go now as Lilly is going past and we always have a chat over the garden gate.

Will be in touch, but it would be nice if some activities could include us dogs (but no cats).

Polly.
